Recreational classes are ideal for those just starting dance, or students who enjoy dancing on a more casual basis. 

• All main recreational classes are combination style:

            -Creative Movement age 18mo+

            -Tap/Ballet for ages 3 to 5 years

            -Tap/Ballet/Jazz for ages 6 to 18 years

We also offer a Tap/Jazz combination class for adult students.

Why are combination classes important?

     At Carolina Spotlight, we believe in creating well-rounded dancers.  All disciplines of dance build off of each other and help students develop attributes important in creating a successful dancer. Tap helps develop rhythm, ballet develops grace and poise, and jazz develops flexibility and isolation of movement.

     Combination classes also give you more value for your money.

• Recreational classes are divided into several age groups:

             -Dance With Me  Age 18 months - 4 years

                                          (parents encourage and participate in this class)

             -Pre-dance-         Ages 3 to 5 years (students must be potty trained)

                                          Tap and Ballet 

             -Combo 1            Ages 6 to 8 years

                                          Ballet, Tap, and Jazz

             -Combo 2            Ages 8-10 years

                                          Ballet, Tap, and Jazz

             -Combo 3            Ages 10 and up

                                          Tap and Jazz            

             -Adult-                  Ages 19 years and up

                                           Class style rotates each year

Additional classes open to Combo 1, 2, and 3 students:

            -Tumbling

Additional classes open to Combo 2 and 3 level students:

            -Ballet

            -Clogging

            -Tumbling

            -Lyrical/Contemporary

            -Hip Hop

            -Pointe (Ages 11 years and older upon placement)

Competitive classes are ideal for students with previous dance experience. These students should have a passion for dance, display natural ability, and be willing to focus more time on perfecting the art.

• 3 team levels are offered currently:

            -Mini Spotlight      -Ages 5 to 8 years

            -Junior Spotlight - Ages 9 to 12 years

            -Teen Spotlight    - Ages 13 to 18 years                                         

Membership on the competitive team is by audition only. This is to ensure that students are only placed on the competitive team when they are ready for more intense focus. More information will be given to those interested upon registration.

Please note: The above age levels are guidelines. Those dancers who are close to the transition ages will be placed in the appropriate group according to audition score and performance throughout the audition process.

What is required of a Competitive Student?

• All team members are required to attend 3-4 regional competitions. Teen andSenior team members also attend our national competition (Mini and Junior have the option for Nationals). These competitions come with additional entry fees and typically require more elaborate costumes. It is the family's responsibility to provide transportation for their student(s) to and from competitions.

• All competitive dancers are required to take stretch/technique class as well as ballet.

• All competitive dancers may be required to practice on Saturdays and must follow the competitive team attendance policy.

• Competitive Students must purchase a Team Jacket to represent our Studio at Competitions. (2018 price was $36, price subject to change)

What forms of dance are taken to competitions?

Our teams compete in Tap, Jazz, Musical Theatre, Lyrical, Contemporary, Hip Hop, and Clogging.  Solos, Duets, and Trios may also compete in a variety of dance styles.

Private lessons are also available to students who are enrolled in our recreational or competitive program in the form of solo, duet, or trio classes. Private lessons are a great way to work on technique or an extra dance to take to competitions!
